AASV Veterinary Student Activities at the 2021 Annual Meeting
February 27 - March 2
It is part of the mission of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians to "mentor students, encouraging life-long careers as swine veterinarians." To help fulfill this mission, the association encourages veterinary students to attend the AASV annual meeting and offers a variety of activities for student participation during the conference:
FREE REGISTRATION
Registration
for the AASV
annual meeting is FREE for AASV Veterinary Student Members. Student
registration for the meeting includes all of the scientific
sessions, including the pre-conference seminars on Saturday and Sunday.
STUDENT PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINAR
For several years now, the AASV has offered a very popular
pre-conference seminar designed especially for new and soon-to-be
veterinarians: Seminar #9, Swine Medicine for Students. It's scheduled for Sunday, February 28 from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM CST. Don't miss it!
VET HUNT - Sponsored by Merck Animal Health
We'd love for you to meet new people and collect veterinarian's
signatures like usual (Vet Hunt 1.0), but this year we're mixing it up a
bit! Participate in the virtual sessions by asking a speaker a question
in the chat box. Take a screenshot for us and submit it in this form with a brief explanation of what you learned (Vet Hunt 2.0)! No sign up
needed, just submit when you're ready! When you complete the form, you
will be entered to win swine swag or other prizes, sponsored by Merck
Animal Health.
STUDENT TRIVIA EVENT - Sponsored by Merck Animal Health
Join us on Sunday, February 28th at 6:00 pm (CST) to test your swine
knowledge, meet new people, and have some fun! Merck Animal Health is
creatively hosting a virtual "pub-style" trivia event via Webex breakout
rooms and sponsoring prizes. You're welcome to create your own team of
3-5 people to get together in person on the night of the event. If you'd
like to stay socially distanced, you can also join individually and
will be placed into a team! ALL ARE WELCOME! Students, sign-up here by Thursday, February 25th, and encourage your AASV friends to
participate, too! Details and connection information will be emailed to
you after the sign-up closes. While only student teams are
eligible to participate, anyone attending the annual meeting is welcome
to observe, enjoy some social interaction, and cheer on the teams! So
add this event to your calendar and join us for a fun evening of trivia!
STUDENT POSTER SESSION - Sponsored by Zoetis
Veterinary students present research and case studies
in poster format. The poster authors will be
available to answer questions in the chat window on Sunday, February 28 from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM CST. Zoetis sponsors the student poster session and provides a $250 stipend to each
participating poster author. Additionally, posters #1 - #15 will be
judged by a practitioner panel for the awarding of scholarships sponsored by United Animal Health.
STUDENT SEMINAR - Sponsored by Zoetis
Some say the best presentations of the meeting are made during the
AASV Student Seminar on Sunday afternoon (February 28, 1:00 - 5:15 pm). On the basis of submitted abstracts, 15 students have
been selected to make presentations of research, case studies, and
literature reviews. Zoetis sponsors this session and
provides a $750 stipend to each student presenter. The students'
oral and written presentations are judged, and a $5,000 scholarship,
funded by Zoetis, is awarded to the top presentation. Elanco Animal
Health provides $20,000 to fund 14 additional scholarships of varying
amounts to the runners-up.
SPEED NETWORKING
This activity for 3rd- and 4th-year students consists of a series of mini-networking discussions for students
to practice their interviewing and networking skills. The 1-hour Speed Networking session will take place Tuesday, March 2, at 3:00 PM CST on a Zoom virtual platform with the use of breakout rooms. It will
be a relaxed and enjoyable way to meet swine savvy students and
mentors, future interns, or even potential new employees or employers!
The program will be formatted similarly to the "speed dating" concept.
You will have 3 minutes to visit with each other. Participation is limited; sign up here as soon as possible.
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION
The announcement of the recipients of the AASV Foundation Veterinary
Student Scholarships, funded by Zoetis and Elanco Animal
Health, and the Student Poster Competition Scholarships, sponsored by United Animal Health, takes place during the AASV Luncheon at 12:30 PM
on Monday,
March 1. The recipients of the AASV Foundation - Merck Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarships are also announced at this time. Join the AASV in recognizing and
congratulating all of these award recipients!
