New! We're Raffling Warren Wilson's Piggy Bank!
AASV Foundation Chairman Dr. Warren Wilson has been collecting spare change in this unique piggy bank since he graduated from veterinary school back in 19..... well, let's just say it was a few years ago! The bank measures about 9" long and 4" tall, and weighs twelve pounds. It is chock-full of coins, some of which could be rather valuable, given their age.
Warren has generously donated the pig to the AASV Foundation for this new FUNdraising activity. Here's the deal: buy a raffle ticket and guess the total amount of money contained within the pig. The person whose guess comes closest to the actual amount wins the piggy bank AND its contents! In the event of a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the winner. ALL of the proceeds benefit the AASV Foundation!

Dr. Alberto Stephano will host and guide you and another guest on a visit to his home city of Leon and the nearby historic towns of Guanajuato and San Miguel Allende. All you need to do is arrange the dates with Dr. Stephano, and make your own flight reservations to get there and back. Here's a sample itinerary of what you'll see and do:
Day One: Arrive in Leon/Baijo airport. Leon is the Mexican shoe capital and one of the most important in the world. If you arrive early enough, you can visit downtown Leon and shop in the stores for shoes, boots, and leather garments. You'll enjoy a large room with a private bath in the Stephano family home, looking to the mountains and the nearby reservoir, and you'll join the Stephano family for meals in their home on this day.
Day Two: You'll take a day trip to Guanajuato, a beautiful mining town with narrow streets and stone houses with balconies, built during the colonial era. Enjoy a walking tour through the streets and many plazas. Visit the university with its green stone, the market design in iron by Eiffel pupils, some Barroco churchs (La Valenciana with a golden altar), the mummy museum, the Quixote museum, the Alondiga, and many other attractions! Day Three: Travel to San Miguel Allende, a unique Mexican town with its own flavor. The many towers of its impressive Gothic-style church reach for the sky. The city has been adopted by European and American artists who enjoy the Mexican life in a beautiful environment. San Miguel is a place to relax! Enjoy a walking tour of the city's beautiful homes with "patios," churches, plazas, and other attractions. There are many museums, shops, galleries, restaurants, and other places to visit. You'll stay overnight in one of the small luxury hotels in town.
  
Day Four: Decisions, decisions! On the way back to Leon, you can visit Dolores Hidalgo, the place where the Mexican independence started, or you can go by another route and visit the Cerro del Cubilete with its impressive monument to Christ, as well as a manificent view, since it is located right in the center of Mexico. You can also visit the "Museo Bicentenario," a great place to learn about the Mexican revolution, and other museums. Lunch will be en route, dinner back in Leon.
Day Five: You'll be leaving to return home today. But if there's time before your flight departs, you can visit some of the many museums in Leon!
General Information: The weather is great, usually mild 20-28C (68-82F), sometimes a bit hot and dry - 33C (91F). Rains from June to September, usually at night or in the afternoon. Leon is usually dry and sunny. You'll want to bring comfortable clothes, a jacket or sweater, sun protection and a hat. In Mexico, lunch is heavy; dinner is light. Let us know your preference. In our home, the food is not too "hot," but if you like, we can prepare it! If desired, we can organize a mountain bike trip or a nice walk close to our home.

Heidi donated the "Pigs in a Blanket" quilt that sold for $2700 at last year's AASVF Auction, and she has created another quilt for this year's auction!
Heidi is the wife of AASV member Dr. Jeff Kaisand, who works for Iowa Select Farms. Heidi is a talented quilter, operates Hens and Chicks Quilt Studio, and is sales manager for American Professional Quilting Systems - in addition to mothering a son and twin daughters! You'll gain a real appreciation for the time and thought she puts into each of her quilts when you read her blog entry about her plans for this quilt - who knew that making a pig quilt involved chickens and eggs?
As you can see in the photos, "Homeward Bound" features blue hues, a traditional Weathervane quilt block, and - what else? - pigs! It was quilted by Emily Keller using an APQS long arm quilting machine (notice the intricate stippling!), and measures 104" square.

AASV Foundation Heritage Award Recipient, the late Dr. Alex Hogg, traveled extensively during his lifetime, visiting 50 states, 60 countries, and all seven continents. On his frequent travels to other lands, Alex often brought home pig figures for his personal collection. Once again, Mary Lou has donated a pig from his collection to the AASV Foundation. This wild sow with her piglets is hand-carved of wood, and measures about 4" tall, 5" long, and 2" wide. Mary Lou recalls that it was given to Alex when he was collaborating with Russian and Polish veterinarians on pseudorabies. |

23. An Up-Close Renewable Energy Tour for Four People

Louisville, Kentucky's Hadley Pottery has been producing iconic pottery for nearly 70 years. Inspired by the designs of renowned artist, Mary Alice Hadley, the pottery is an American classic, cherished by everyday users, enthusiasts, and collectors in the United States and around the world. AASV past presidents Butch Baker and Kerry Keffaber and their wives have selected and donated a number of items bearing the popular Pig pattern that is a part of the original Hadley "Country" collection.
Hadley Stoneware is extremely durable. Made from clay native to Kentucky and Indiana, the ware is hand-painted, glazed, and then kiln-fired to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, making it highly resistant to chipping and scratching. It is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe.

Up for auction is a two-person, 1 1/2 day guided spin-fishing trip for Rainbow, German Brown, and Cutthroat Trout in the Bull Shoals Dam tailwaters on the White River in north central Arkansas. Auction winners will be provided lodging for Friday and Saturday nights in a log cabin along with White River near Cotter, Arkansas, which is the self-proclaimed "Trout Capital of America." Food, non-alcoholic beverages, and guided fishing all day Saturday and half-day Sunday will also be provided.
Fishing will be either via wading or boat, depending upon water conditions and dam generation schedule. Winner will supply their own rods, reels, line, lures, waders, licenses, trout stamps, and transportation to Flippin, Arkansas. Actual dates will be determined via mutual agreement. Trout fishing on the White River is open 365 days per year, and this 92-mile stretch of Bull Shoals tailwater is consistently one of American's most productive fisheries in terms of trout numbers and size.
