In an effort to engage EVERY AASV member in the ambitious fundraising effort to surpass 100K, the auction committee sold raffle tickets for the chance to win one of four FABULOUS prizes. The raffle drawing took place on March 4; here are the results:

Sculptor Mark Richter has set aside a 2' x 5' log (pictured) for this project, and he will work with the buyer to design the sculpture of your choice. This isn't just any old log, either. Here's what Richter had to say about the tree it came from: "A lot of history behind the tree. It is a white oak. The tree came from Morristown, MN. It sat next to a country schoolhouse. When I cut into the tree I counted the rings. About 80 years ago they must have nailed something to the tree, the wood was stained on all 4 corners. The county took the tree down, it was too close to the road. I counted the rings - tree looks to be 186 years old."
Richter will carve a one-of-a-kind work of art to be displayed indoors or out, for home or office. The pig sculpture shown is just a small sample of his craftsmanship. The finished carving may be picked up at the Swine Vet Center or the AASV - buyer's choice.

The workshop will include a one-day wet-lab tailored to your needs at the ISU VDL. Pigs for diagnostic examination can either be submitted from a client(s) in need of an extensive diagnostic evaluation or be provided by the ISU-VDL. This session will include an extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of the diagnostic process, provide participants practical information and skills to enhance the value of their future diagnostic submissions, and offer an in-depth look into the ancillary laboratory technologies used to support the diagnostic services at the ISU VDL.
A lunch with ISU VDL faculty and staff will be provided.

15. Custom Camp Knife

Dr. Songer says, "I made this knife after the manner of blacksmiths traveling with explorers such as Lewis and Clark. It started out as an industrial ball bearing in 52100 steel. I forged it out into a billet and then profiled the blade and ground it to shape. Rough forging marks were left to simulate the work of a blacksmith of the early century. After shaping, it was heat-treated to ~ Rc 60. The handle includes a guard made from a segment of a farrier's rasp, spacers of turquoise and black composite, Arizona desert ironwood, and a warthog tusk. The sheath is also made rough, in keeping with the leatherwork of the day."

17. Wayne Tail Curler Junior Paperweight Pig

Wayne Tail Curler Junior was a baby pig creep feed marketed by the Wayne Feed Division of Continental Grain Company. I (Joe Barban) was the marketing manager at Continental in the early 1980's. In 1982, Associated Engineering of Mankato, Minnesota, came to us with this Wayne Tail Curler Junior paperweight as a suggested premium. We never went forward with the premium idea, thus this is the only one existing today!
The name Wayne® T.C.® Junior is embossed within the casting on both sides of the base. Although this paperweight measures only 2" wide, 4" long, and 2 1/2" tall, your papers aren't going anywhere: this little guy weighs a hefty 3 pounds!

19. Antique Book: Contagious Diseases of Swine and Other Domestic Animals - 1880

This book is the U.S. Department of Agriculture Special Report No. 22, published in 1880, and contains the reports of the Veterinary Surgeons appointed to investigate diseases of swine, and infectious and contagious diseases incident to other classes of domesticated animals. There are 14 colored plates , dated 1879, illustrating various lesions associated with swine plague, contagious lung plague of cattle, and rinderpest. Perhaps most riveting are the first-hand accounts, written journal-style, of the veterinary surgeons reporting their observations and deductions as they traveled to farms to investigate these and other serious diseases.
Dr. Parker provides a bit of the ownership history of this book: It was gifted to him by Professor Robert W. Bratton, who was a 1936 Purdue University graduate. After serving in World War II, Bratton returned to do graduate work at Cornell University and became a member of the Animal Science faculty there. One of his prized PhD students was Dr. Edwin Willett. Professor Bratton was teaching and doing research in swine breeding and physiology during the last chapter of his professional journey. He retired in 1978 to his home farm at New Ross, Indiana where he and Dr. Parker visited often.
20. Antique Book: Feeds and Feeding, abridged - 7th edition

The full title of this book is Feeds and Feeding, Abridged. The essentials of the feeding, care, and management of farm animals, including poultry, by F.B. Morrison, Professor of Animal Husbandry and Animal Nutriion, and head of the Animal Husbandry Department, Cornell University. Seventh edition, 1937. The first edition of this book was published in 1917. However, the 7th edition was entirely rewritten and rest, published in January 1937. This is an ex-library copy, with a couple of ink spots and a few tears, but otherwise in good condition with a solid spine, excellent binding and cover. 503 pages. You will enjoy the historical reference point this book provides, especially the many high quality photographs of "modern agriculture" back in the day. Fascinating!
21. 1933 FMD Billboard Poster from Lincolnshire, England

Here is an original billboard poster, used for the control of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in England back in 1933! It was issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), outlining all the rules and regulations for the area of Lincolnshire on the east coast of England. The full poster measures 35" x 22". It's torn in places along folds, with little or no loss, and has some discoloration and foxing, but it will look excellent when framed!

44. Limited Edition Commemorative Toy Tractor: Case DC3 Narrow Front

This 1/16 scale diecast metal tractor and loader replicates the Case DC3 Narrow Front, and features authentic paint and decals. Case model DC tractors first appeared in 1939; production ended in 1955. In 1944, the DC3 tractor on rubber sold for $1,270. The comparable unit on steel wheels listed at $1,040. By the early 1950's the DC3 tractor was available with an adjustable front axle. This option could be ordered from the factory or installed in the field. An electric starter and lights were not standard equipment but could be purchased for $16.00.

Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, this all-wood structure was built with fourteen square feet of living quarters included. I am drawn to historic structures which silently tell the story of an era since past, and I created the image of the Ute Mountain Fire Tower as a giant among the trees it once protected."
