Deep in the heart of a Tennessee forest, a varied mosaic of red maple, sugar maple, white oak, and tulip popular trees brings light to the fall season. Home to black bears, these forests also shelter hundreds of avian species, including wild turkey. The tulip poplar, with its extremely straight trunk, was planted on the grounds of Mt. Vernon by George Washington, who is better known for his escapades involving a cherry tree. This famed poplar, which branches out over fifty feet in the wild, is the second tallest native tree east of the Mississippi.

Listen up, all of you history buffs out there! Here's your chance to own an original copy of the AASP Newsletter containing one of the first published accounts of what we now know as PRRS. The article, Reproductive Failure of Unknown Etiology, was authored by Dr. Kerry Keffaber and appeared in the second issue of the AASP Newsletter (the precursor to the Journal of Swine Health and Production). It has been the most-requested reprint of any AASP/V manuscript in the association's history. At the time of publication, Dr. Keffaber was engaged in private practice at the Swine Health Center in Roann, Indiana. Later, he served AASV on the Executive Committee, ascending to the position of AASV President in 2008.

Those facts alone make the Sept-Oct 1989 issue of the AASP Newsletter quite desirable, but there's more. This particular copy belonged to none other than Dr. Bob Morrison: noted PRRS researcher, leader in the PRRS elimination effort, and past-president of AASV. The mailing label bears Dr. Morrison's name and address at the University of Minnesota, and it's clear that Dr. Keffaber's article piqued Bob's interest, as he underlined the words "undiagnosed reproductive failure on 11 farms" in red ink. Talk about history in the making!

There are additional tidbits of swine industry history contained within the twelve pages of Volume 1, Number 2, including mention of NPPC's then soon-to-be released Quality Assurance Program (Level 1), as well as a full-page spread advertisement for the Pig Pro production management program offered by Oxford Veterinary Laboratories.
