5. Fly Fishing Outfit, Casting Instruction, and Iowa Fishing Experience
Donated by: The Wilderness Backpacking Pig Vets*
Winning bidder: Dr. Matt Anderson, $3500
Whether you are an experienced fly fisher or want to learn; whether you prefer to fish for trout or bass, this is the fly-fishing package for you!
First, THE GEAR: This outfit has been hand-selected for quality and versatility! The highly regarded Douglas Sky 9’ 6-weight graphite rod is well suited to casting for both warm-water and cold-water species of fish: it works well for casting the larger bass flies and is equally capable of punching out small trout flies on windy days. Douglas Sky rods have swept the competition at the Yellowstone Angler Shootout more than once against top brands in the industry! For the reel, we chose The Fly Shop’s L2a flyreel, a lightline, large-arbor reel that features a smooth, reliable drag. It’s machined from solid aircraft aluminum especially for The Fly Shop and is loaded with Scientific Angler’s Amplitude Infinity 6-weight, weight-forward floating (WF-6-F) flyline, which pairs very well with the rod.
To complete the package, two sets of leaders and tippet are included: one for trout fishing (Scientific Anglers Absolute Trout Tapered Leader 9.0ft 5X with 32-yd spool of 5X tippet) and the other for bass and bluegill fishing (Rio Products Freshwater Tapered Leader Bass 9 ft 10 lb with 30-yd spool of Bass Tippet 10 lb). Last, but not least, a flybox containing a sampling of trout and bass flies is all you’ll need for your next (or your first!) fly fishing adventure.
Speaking of ADVENTURES: Bring your new gear to Iowa for casting instruction tailored to your level and a guided fishing experience of your choice: 1) Float-tube fishing for bass on a lovely private central Iowa pond (float tube supplied) OR 2) Small spring-creek trout fishing in the driftless area of northeast Iowa (yes, there are trout in Iowa!).
Experienced fly fisherman Dr. Lee Schulteis will provide casting instruction (if desired) on day 1 and guide your chosen fishing destination on day 2. Two nights’ lodging will be provided (Hotel Pattee or Bear Creek Cabins, depending on the destination), along with area transportation and meals at local hotspots. It’s even possible that a few of the *Wilderness Backpacking Pig Vets (Perry Harms, Phil Hayes, Jeff Husa, Reid Philips, Dale Polson, Lee Schulteis, Matthew Turner, and John Waddell) could show up to join the party.
Lee will work to arrange a mutually convenient date for the outing and will customize the adventure to the experience and interest level of the winning bidder. Bass fishing can be arranged in the spring, summer, or fall. For trout fishing, plan on sometime in April-May-early June or September-October.
Not included: Transportation to and from central Iowa; Iowa fishing license.

whatever custom project is on the work bench next! For the past decade John has spent
countless hours driving his custom steel sculptures all over the country to art fairs and shows,

18. Talavera Ceramic Plate with AASV Logo
Donated by: Dr. Joaquin Becerril
Winning bidder: Dr. Attila Farkas, $130
Talavera is a type of majolica earthenware, a white and glazed type of ceramic. Although the Spaniards introduced this type of pottery, ironically the term Talavera is used much more in Mexico than in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. In fact, Talavera is the oldest tin-glazed ceramic in America and it is still being manufactured with the same techniques as in the 16th Century. Talavera is made from a mixture of only two clays, a dark clay and a light, slightly rose-colored clay. One characteristic of authentic Talavera pottery is the quality of detail in the painting, expertly applied. Only natural earth pigments are used for the colors.
This Talavera plate was created in a certified workshop in the state of Puebla, Mexico; using the traditional Talavera process. Workshops producing authentic Talavera are certified by passing an inspection and verification process at least every six months. The Mexican Talavera Regulatory Council regulates the production of Talavera and restricts the use of the term to items produced within the designated zone of Puebla. There are only less than 20 certified workshops producing genuine Talavera. Certified Talavera pieces bear the signature of the potter, the logo of the workshop and the special hologram that certifies the piece’s authenticity. Only pieces from workshops that meet the standards are certified!
