Golfers rise to the top
Forty golfers teed off for the AASV Foundation’s Midwest Golf Outing, held August 22 at the Ames (Iowa) Golf and Country Club. While the weather was cooperative in the morning, a deluge of rain in the early afternoon resulted in a soggy last couple of holes, causing the event organizer, Dr John Kolb, to jokingly rename the fundraiser “The Sponge Bob Underwater Open.” In spite of the wet ending, the golfers played their best for the foundation in the four-person team, best-ball contest, and prizes were awarded to the winners as follows: First place teamHosted by Elanco Animal Health Second place teamHosted by Intervet Third place teamHosted by Boehringer Ingelheim Individual contestsLongest drive: Matt Sexton, Eric Weaver Closest to the pin: Jeff Okones, Jeff Kaisand Longest putt: Warren Wilson The event was sponsored by Elanco Animal Health and Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica. Proceeds from the event provide funding for a variety of AASV Foundation programs, including research grants, swine externship grants for veterinary students, and travel stipends for students attending the AASV annual meeting. |

AASV Foundation requests research proposals
As part of its planned annual schedule, the American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation seeks research proposals for funding in 2008. Up to $12,000 will be disbursed, with a maximum of $6000 awarded per project (all currency in $US). Proposals are due January 31, 2008. The selection and announcement of projects for funding will take place in March. Proposed research must fit into one of the five action areas stated in the AASV Foundation mission (see sidebar). Proposals must also contain the following: 1. Identification of the issue 2. Background information 3. Description of the project 4. Timeline 5. Budget 6. Plan to apply results for maximum return to swine veterinarians, veterinary students, or both. No project timeline is to exceed 12 months. Auction fever spreading through AASV Foundation
The AASV Foundation Auction Committee needs your help! The committee is already hard at work securing items for next year’s auction to be held during the 2008 AASV Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.
Seizing on the lessons learned from the 2007 annual meeting, the committee has established a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” of raising $50,000 at the upcoming auction. The funds raised support the foundation’s mission to ensure the future of swine veterinary medicine by funding research, scholarships, and educational programs and materials.
The auction committee needs you to donate items to be auctioned. If you are interested in donating an item or making a contribution, please visit the AASVF website at http://www.aasv.org/foundationto download a donation form to be completed and submitted with the donation. Donations for the auction must be received no later than December 1, 2007, to insure proper recognition to the donor and inclusion in the auction booklet. Any items or financial contributions received after the deadline will be held for the 2009 auction. For additional information, contact the AASV office (515-465-5255; E-mail; aasv@aasv.org).
When considering items to donate, keep in mind that the $50,000 goal can be achieved by auctioning 100 donated items at $500 each. Of course, the AASVF welcomes all donations and contributions. Successful auction items in the past have included hunting trips, handcrafted items, sporting equipment, artwork, and tickets to sporting events and other activities. If you choose to make a financial contribution to this effort, be sure to note that the donation is to be used for the “AASVF Auction.” All items and contributions should be submitted to the AASV Foundation at the address on the donation form. All donations to the foundation are tax deductible.
