Swine veterinary student scholarships awarded

The AASV Foundation awarded scholarships to six veterinary students with an interestin swine veterinarymedicine at the recent AASV Annual Meeting in Nashville.

Sarah Probst, a student at the University of Illinois, received the top award of $5000 provided by Alpharma Animal Health. Probst's paper, "A survey of the changing relationship between Midwest food animal veterinarians and the producers they serve," won the award and received high praise from the judges. Dr. Rodger Schneck of Alpharma made the scholarship presentation during the AASV awards banquet at the meeting.

Five additional scholarships of $2000 each were sponsored by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation on behalf of Elanco Animal Health. Dr. Greg Armbruster, Elanco representative, presented the scholarships to the following students:

To compete for the awards, each student submitted a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review to be presented during the Student Seminar at the AASV annual meeting. A selection panel, under the direction of Drs. Sandra Amass and Tom Fangman, AASV Collegiate Activities Committee co-chairs, reviewed the manuscripts. The panel selected 15 students to publish their papers in the AASV proceedings, make oral presentations at the meeting, and compete for the coveted scholarships. The finalists included students from Iowa State University, Purdue University, Michigan State University, University of Guelph, University of Minnesota, the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois, University of Pennsylvania, University of Prince Edward Island, Ohio State University, and Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina. Each of the 15 seminar participants received a $500 travel stipend and personalized gift generously provided by Alpharma Animal Health.

A second panel of judges evaluated the students' oral presentations at the AASV annualmeeting to determine the six scholarship winners. The judges also considered a biography provided by each student outlining his or her background and interest in swine veterinary medicine, and a letter of recommendation from a veterinarian or faculty advisor. Dr. Tom Fangman headed the panel of judges, which included AASV members Dr. R.C. Ebert, Dr. Larry Rueff, Dr. David D. Davis (representing Elanco Animal Health), and Dr. Rodger Schneck (representing Alpharma Animal Health).

Otake wins AASV graduate student scholarship

The AASV Foundation named Dr. Satoshi Otake the recipient of the $2000 Veterinary Graduate Student Scholarship for 2001. Dr. David Madsen presented the award during the AASV annual meeting awards banquet in Nashville, Tennessee.

Otake obtained his veterinary degree from Azabu University in Japan in 1999, where he received the Ochi award given to the top senior veterinary student. Since then, he has been employed as a graduate research assistant and MS candidate under Dr. Scott Dee at the University of Minnesota. Otake is a member of the Japanese Veterinary Association as well as the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.

The AASV Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship was sponsored by the AASV for veterinarians pursuing an advanced degree(MS or PhD) in swine medicine. Veterinary graduate students whose papers were selected for presentation during the AASV Research Topics session were eligible to compete for the scholarship. To select the scholarship winner, the judges evaluated the research paper published in the AASV proceedings, a biography outlining the applicant's interest in swine medicine, and a letter of recommendation from a veterinarianor faculty advisor.

Dr. John Deen of the AASV Foundation headed the panel of judges for this year's award. Drs. Roman Pogranichnyy, Angel De Grau, and Sara Williams competed with Otake in for the scholarship. Otake's research was titled "Transmission of PRRSV by mechanical vectors and the impact of biosecurity."

Call for papers - AASV Student Seminar

Veterinary student scholarships

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for up to 15 veterinary students to make scientific presentations at the Student Seminar during the AASV annual meeting on Sunday, March 3, 2002 in Kansas City, Missouri. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration by September 24, 2001 (firm deadline). The abstracts will be reviewed by a panel of private practitioners, academicians, and industry veterinarians. Students whose papers are selected for presentation at the meeting will be notified by October 15, 2001, and will be expected to provide the complete paper or an abstract for publication by November 16, 2001.

To help defray the costs of attending the AASV meeting, ALPHARMA Animal Health is generously providing a $500 honorarium to the student presenter of each paper selected for the seminar.

Veterinary students whose papers are selected for presentation at the meeting will be eligible to compete for one of six veterinary student scholarships awarded through the AASV Foundation. The oral presentations will be judged to determine the scholarship winners. ALPHARMA will provide a $5000 scholarship to the student whose paper, oral presentation, and supporting information are judged best overall. The Eli Lilly & Company Foundation, on behalf of Elanco Animal Health, continues to sponsor the Elanco Veterinary Student Scholarship Program, which provides five additional awards of $2,000 each. The awards will be presented at the AASV annual meeting awards banquet on Monday, March 4, 2002.

Students interested in competing for the ALPHARMA and Elanco Veterinary StudentScholarships must also submit the following supporting information along with their abstract (all supporting information must also be received by September 24, 2001):

1. A brief biography and explanation of the student's interest in swine medicine,
2. An explanation of the student's intended use of the funds, and
3. A letter of recommendation from a veterinarian or veterinary school faculty member attesting to the character and interest of the applicant.
